Today is the day of the campaign #yoviajoseguro, in which, both Baby Experience and Born To BE !, we join. In this case, reflecting aloud on the connotations of Safety and Responsibility.

SECURITY

When many parents come into the store every day asking for a child safety seat, we usually ask what kind of chair do you want, what functions should it perform. Most of you answer that "be safe" and sometimes, taking this fact for granted, you talk about comfort in the first order.

The next question is usually, especially in children of about one year (after group 0), if you want it for or against the march. Obviously, it is to know the "work" that lies ahead for the next few minutes. In any case, we know that we can never give security in its strict definition (absence of risk), when we subject a baby to a deceleration of 50 km / h to 0 km / h in 90 milliseconds. The human body is not prepared for it. Our function, then, is as follows:

  • Contextualize risks without judging. Any child restraint system can only reduce risks and we must understand that we only limit ourselves to it. Each parent is free to provide the level of risk that they are willing to take based on the probability of having accidents (there is a part controllable by our decisions at the wheel and another random), we are nobody to judge it. Each parent has to weigh the km traveled per year in the vehicle with the probability of an accident and the probability of serious, irreversible or fatal injuries. We want, at all times, to avoid focusing on drama or judgment on what is right or wrong (although, obviously, being a parent does not cover us from having emotions about it). However, there is something we should reflect on: a child in favor of walking is always exposing him to a greater risk of fatality than any other occupant for two reasons:
    • Its great fragility in the face of equal slowdowns
    • Does not have the passive safety devices that other adults do (for example, airbags)

Are we willing to assume that what we love most is more exposed than ourselves? It's up to you…

  • Understand the magnitude of forces and vectors that act in the event of an accident, the most probable directions of them and the capacity of the body of a baby to support them.
  • Finally, child restraint devices are only solutions that channel a force generated by inertia to be distributed to the part of the body that can best tolerate it without causing serious injury. Only that. There are no miracles. If a baby weighs 10 kg and we apply a deceleration of 25g, we generate 250kg. What part of the body do we want to absorb this energy? How do we want it to be distributed?

Safety is not explained by a make or model of chair, but by a level of risk desired in the face of a certain probability of having an accident and the direction of the accident.

RESPONSIBILITY

In stores, most of the time, we see babies' faces when parents come to ask about a child restraint system (SRI). It is not banal at all. We even often know his name. The trust you place in us requires a very high responsibility. This translates into our constant training and the more we know, the more we realize the nuances to take into account and, paradoxically, the more doubts are generated. And it feeds back, every day we know a little more, but we are very aware, that for this baby who enters the door in our stores, a responsibility weighs that is never enough. We can go "a little further" in our advice. And this is the exhilarating path and challenge. We are sorry to those who advised you "yesterday", because our level has been lower than that of those who will advise "tomorrow".

In any case, we know that the level of risk is greatly reduced and without any doubt, putting children in the opposite direction to the march as long as possible.

Thanks for trusting us,

Baby Experience Team and Born To BE!
