A few days ago we were talking about the baby's dream and how important it is to gradually learn what his pattern is.

Today we want to propose you a totally practical post. In these lines you will find exposed all the articles that can be related to the rest of the baby. That does not mean that all are necessary. We simply want you to know them before choosing and be yourselves to decide what interests you most for your baby and your lifestyle.

BABY'S ROOM AND CRADLES

One of the first items to value is the crib. There are many types and, oddly enough, with different utilities.

The first is MINICOT. We say that it is the first because its measurements (usually 80 * 50) make it very useful in the first months. Since it is so small you can move it anywhere in the house. It is important that it is easy to transport (that it has wheels) because you will be moving it throughout the day to monitor the baby: in your room, in the dining room, living room, etc. Its small size also helps the baby to get used to the open space little by little. Think that after being 9 months in Mom's belly it is difficult to understand that now there are no walls to contain her.

There are several types,

Colecho: They can be attached to the bed by removing one of the sides. They adjust to the height of the adult bed and if you want you can remount it to move it around the house. It is a fantastic solution to avoid having to get up at night to feed the baby.

Extensible: It adapts in size to each stage of the baby, from birth to three years. It is a fantastic solution to keep a small space ideal for the first months of the baby and expand as you need more space.

Conventional: They are very useful small cribs because you can move them around the house. The useful life of this crib is from 0 to 4-5 months. After this time, the weight and size of the baby are excessive for the structure of the crib.

BABY'S ROOM

How to organize the baby's room depends on your organization at home. Only you know the spaces, the distribution of the rooms and the distances between your room and theirs. You will use the baby's room during the first months if you locate the hygiene and diaper change area there. It will also serve to place all the baby's things, clothes, blankets and toys.

There are many options to organize the baby's room. Among them buy the furniture separately or choose one “Convertible room”.

The latter are beautiful, they look comfortable for the newborn baby and are very exciting for parents. But you should not get carried away by the image of this unique baby and think about whether it is a practical solution for the future. These rooms are usually made up of furniture that is transformed. The crib incorporates a chest of drawers, a changing table, storage drawers or a shelf. The disadvantages of this furniture is that perhaps when the child grows, if you have another baby, or you change the space, it may not fit with the measurements of the new room or with the uses. In short, it is a personal option, but we believe that it should be carefully considered.

If you choose to purchase the furniture separately, our recommendations are:

- CRADLE

Keep in mind that there are several types of crib and that it will depend on the use and how you want your baby to sleep, choose one or the other.

  • Individual cots: The cribs that are fixed in the baby's room. You will find them in 60 * 120 and 70 * 140 (most cribs of this size will become a mini bed until 5-6 years old. They have the possibility to remove the sides and put some trims.
  • Co-sleeping cribs or sidecar crib: cribs designed to be attached to the bed. They lack a barrier and this means that they can be joined laterally. This type of crib is very comfortable to breastfeed the baby, you do not need to get up just to approach him and you can continue sleeping both without problem.
  • Extensible: They are cribs that are transformed in some cases into a 90 * 200 bed and can last up to 10 years.

Once you have decided how you are going to sleep you have to take into account the time of use that you will give it. Approximately the time of use of a crib is three years (in the case of the cribs convertible into a bed longer), with which attention must be paid to details such as:

  • Comfortable bed base
  • The height should be 30 cm in the high position (for newborn) and 60 cm (from 3-4 months) in the low position
  • The separation of bars must be 4.5cm or 6.6cm
  • Cribs with wheels must have a brake
  • Paint and varnishes must not be toxic
  • The mattress must fit well so that there is no gap greater than 2 cm

- CRADLE MATTRESSES

The best thing for the growing baby is that the mattress is durable and firm without being overly enveloping. This avoids the possibility of sudden infant death.

Therefore the best mattresses are those that:

  • do not exert pressure points to avoid cranial malformations and promote the development of your spine
  • be firm
  • baby can move without sinking
  • that are breathable so that you can regulate the temperature well in both winter and summer
  • antiallergic materials. To avoid skin problems or asthma, it is best that both the cover and the materials are hypoallergenic
  • that can be removed to wash the cover with complete peace of mind
  • that are waterproof (or you can add a waterproof cover)
  • It fits well in the crib, so that the baby cannot get trapped or any part of his body

- COMFORTABLE: Using a dresser is practical for storing and keeping baby's clothes close at hand. You can also use it as a changer with the board expander, and have organizers with diapers, lotions and creams for baby care.

- CLOSET:  If you do not have a built-in wardrobe in the room, it would be interesting to have an individual wardrobe to store your clothes, toys, towels, sheets, etc.

- REDUCERS FOR CRADLE

The newborn is used to the reduced space in mom's belly. At birth he must get used to a space that, for him, can be infinite. To help you feel safe and secure there are calls Cradle reducers or Nest cradle. This product is ideal for the first months in the case of practicing pigtail, to be even safer, or for cribs that are too large, to reduce space and so that the baby does not feel lost.

- CRADLE PROTECTORS

Crib bumpers are used to protect baby from possible bumping of the bars when moving while sleeping.

Before buying a crib protector you have to consider:

  • Be breathable
  • That the cords or ties that are tied to the bars are short (so that the baby can not get tangled) or knotted on the outside
  • They should be removed when the child begins to walk so that he can not use it as a support to get out of the crib
  • Containing no swallowable parts
  • Washable

 - QUILTS

Maintaining an adequate temperature while the baby sleeps is very important. Quilts fulfill this function but you have to take into account:

  • Baby should be able to breathe and have adequate ventilation if the comforter covers his face while sleeping
  • Fabrics should be soft and cotton
  • The recommended minimum age for these products is nine months. This recommendation is made because newborn babies do not have the ability to remove the comforter if it comes to their faces. If the baby is supervised while sleeping, there is no problem using it from birth, but if you cannot supervise it, it is better to use a sack or blanket pajamas.
  • Know the size of the crib in which the quilt should be used
  • The comforter should include warnings about the room temperature marked with the word TOG. What is TOG? It is the ratio with which the insulation capacity of the fabrics that make up the bag or quilt is measured. The higher the TOG, the more heat it gives off.
  • You should not over-shelter the baby.

- SLEEPING BAG

Sleeping bags are an interesting alternative for babies who move around a lot and tend to uncover. In addition to ensuring that it will not be cold, it provides security since it is not necessary to use blankets or sheets that can catch the baby.

To choose a sleeping bag you should also take into account a series of recommendations:

  • As in the case of duvets, pay attention to the temperature of the room in which the product is used to prevent hyperthermia (TOG)

TOG is the temperature recommendation from the manufacturer of the quilt or sleeping bag. You will always find a label next to the garment that indicates it.

  • the size of the neck and arm openings should prevent the baby from sliding into the bag
  • They should not carry pieces that can be swallowed
  • Fabrics should be soft and cotton

PAJAMA MANTA

In addition to the bag there is the option of the "pajama-blanket". It is the best option for babies who are already starting to crawl or walk since it makes it easier for them to move their legs, they feel less burdened and that makes them wake up less times at night.

- THE POSITIONERS OR ANTI-TIP CUSHIONS

The positioning cushions are very useful in the following cases:

Postural error correction: Due to the recommendations for the prevention of sudden infant death (MSL), which consists of putting babies to sleep in the supine position (on their back), an increase in plagiocephaly or other postural problems. To do this, the pillows that make sure that the baby's skull does not receive any pressure, help it to develop normally. They are also very comfortable for the stroller, as the baby may spend many hours in it. To avoid cranial deformities, it is also recommended that when the baby is not sleeping, play with him in the prone position (upside down).

Postural and space correction: According to physiotherapists, sleeping in the supine position forces the baby to be with the head turned to the side, forcing the neck, the hips too open outwards and the shoulders are always in rotation. For this there are lifting mattresses that, in addition to helping to reduce the baby's space, provide comfort to his back, shoulders and neck.

Regurgitation and reflux: In newborns, the valve that connects the esophagus to the stomach may be immature, causing food or gastric flows to rise into the mouth.

The best way to alleviate or soften these symptoms is to keep the baby upright after feeding, not to move him too much, to burp after each feeding and, as they sometimes swallow or cough up the reflux while lying down, to sleep with a wedge. This makes their position slightly tilted, making it easier for you to eject them.

Respiratory and colic problems: The lungs are not fully developed until at least three years of age and when there are respiratory problems it is advisable to sleep slightly inclined. When the baby has colic, it is also advisable to sleep slightly inclined since the gas tends to rise, the gases accumulate in the abdomen and compress it to continue rising. In addition, due to the position of the legs, open to the sides, the sphincter is compressed and does not allow gases or feces to be released. The options for this are the lifting wedges that allow the baby to have a slightly inclined back.

-COMPANY LIGHT

There are many types of company light or "night scares". Simple, with drawings, with figures projected on the ceiling, with sensors or cold light.

Whichever you choose will become a great ally both for your baby, because he will not feel lost in the darkness of the room, as for you, because you can watch him, feed him or change him without having to turn on a stronger light.

- PIJAMA:

When choosing a pajamas you must take into account:

  • the season of the year
  • the room temperature
  • if it becomes a bed
  • make them comfortable
  • that allow them mobility
  • They are easy to put on and fasten, if it is winter it is very comfortable to have clasps in the crotch to change the diaper without having to remove it entirely
  • the fabrics must be soft, light and breathable. Cotton is the fabric that best treats baby's skin
  • remove the labels as they can cause irritation to the child's sensitive skin.

- DOLL OR COMPANY DOU DOU

Some babies like to hug their companion doll at night. They also help the baby in his development since they usually have the smell of mom, different shapes, colors and textures.

One of the warnings to prevent sudden infant death is that babies do not sleep with dolls, pillows, etc. in the first months. so they can't get trapped underneath them.

- HUMIDIFIERS

To keep the house with a good temperature during the winter, heating is usually used, this causes the humidity of the house to be rather dry, which is aggressive for the baby's airways. To do this, humidifiers are used, consisting of a water container that, through different systems, evaporates and becomes part of the air in the room in which we have placed it.

There are several types of humidifiers:

  • hot steam (They use heat evaporation, which can make them dangerous because they work when they are hot, and they also increase the temperature of the room)
  • cold steam (The water vapor they produce is finer and easier to breathe, they do not work hot and that means that in summer they can also be used by not raising the temperature of the place).

- INTERCOMMUNICATORS OR BABY WATCHERS

Intercoms or baby monitors are a good form of security when the baby is in a different room than his parents. But when buying an intercom it is important to keep in mind, although the possibility that the baby is exposed to waves that can be harmful has not yet been proven. Therefore, preventively, some manufacturers are launching models that minimize radiation and avoid exposure of the baby to it.

There are several types of baby monitors:

  • with camera (They are more comfortable since if the baby emits any sound, it is not necessary to enter his room, with the risk of waking him, to corroborate that it is fine. There are models that connect to the television, to the computer with internet access. Normally this type of devices also have infrared to see the baby in the dark
  • by sound (they transmit the sound from the transmitter to the receiver. There are singles or those with the possibility of listening and speaking)
  • with sensors (with motion sensors to alert in case there is no motion).
