Because a large number of customers ask us about it and we have also noticed an increase in the request of the 'walkers', we want to write a few lines about them.

En esta foto podemos ver un antiguo andador. Ahora los encontraréis con miles de formas, colores, sonidos, etc.
In this photo we can see an old walker. Now you will find them with thousands of shapes, colors, sounds, etc.

A few years ago, several studies were started in different countries to find out if all the legends that were heard about walkers were true. They wanted to see if this product, which was fully widespread in homes around the world, really  slowed the baby's development or could pose a physical danger to him.

Many will surely have it in mind like that circular element with wheels where you introduce the baby, being semi-hung, and it can move autonomously. Do not confuse it with the ride-on, in this case the baby pushes while leaning to start walking.

In 2011 the Spanish Association of Pediatrics They communicated their position before this article of childcare in this way:

'What is the best baby walker? ... The one that is not used'

In their recommendations we could read things like:

  • They quadruple the risk of falling down the stairs, the risk of fracture by fall and also the age of fall advances up a ladder at eight or twelve months.
  • They increase the risk of burns and poisoning (They can walk at any age through dangerous areas such as the kitchen, sink, etc. while adults do an activity such as cooking)
  • They have no beneficial effect on gait learning, quite the contrary. A baby, before starting to walk, must crawl or stand up with support. It is very important that in all this development, the little one looks at his feet when starting his first steps. You will reach and manipulate objects within your reach to experiment, develop your sense of touch, smell and sight. A child who walks with a walker cannot go through those experiences.

ACCIDENTS

Health Canada collected data from 16 hospitals across the country, between 1990 and 2002, and found thatandador-bright-starts-andador-tp_7706337866214510868f more than 1,900 babies (5 to 14 months) had sustained injuries while in their walker. These injuries were related to falls from stairs, they had turned on themselves, burns (stoves, hot drinks, etc.) or poisoning (household cleaning products).

Because of this the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act banned its manufacture, advertising, import and marketing since April 2004. If any company decides to do any of these actions, it is exposed to six months in prison or a fine of 100.00 $.

DELAY MOTOR DEVELOPMENT

The effects of walkers on the motor and mental development of babies were published in this study. It compared infants who used a walker with infants who did not. They observed that the first ones start sitting and walking later, in addition, they achieve worse results in the Bayley test, both in motor and mental development. The results were equalized between twelve and fifteen months.

In that same study, too, they differentiate between walkers that allow vision of the legs with others that prevent it. They observed that there are intermediate results in infants using walkers with vision of the legs, since it is very important for development. Although, these babies could not manipulate objects on the floor or on surfaces of their own, so not living this experience continued to be an impediment to their development.

Today there are multiple studies that make the majority of pediatricians  do not recommend the use of walkers:

So does the who, The Spanish Association of Primary Care Pediatrics (aepap) and the AAP (American Pediatric Association)

The AAP recommendations in 2001 they were:

1- Prohibition of manufacture and sale of walkers

2- Static activity centers are a safer alternative in principle, although accident data is not yet available.

3- Parents should be informed through campaigns and also in the anticipatory guides, of the risks of the walker.

CONCLUSION

We believe that after all this information we all know a little more about the use of the andador 2walker. Now you know that 'what you had heard' was not a simple urban legend, but was fully demonstrated with studies and medical recommendations.

Our recommendation is that if your baby starts to walk do not force him, allow him a space free of obstacles that can cause damage and accompany him in that new discovery. You will always remember 😉
