Does the name María Montessori ring a bell? She was the Italian educator and doctor who, more than 100 years ago, devised and named this educational method still in force today. And it is not that it is only current, it is that Montessori is more fashionable than ever! Now that alternative pedagogies are beginning to gain strength in the face of a traditional education that makes all children work at the same pace without taking into account that each being is a world, with its needs, abilities, curiosities and with one thing in common: a great ability to learn.

The Montessori method he does not have to stay at school, we can also provide at home an environment where our child can develop freely, in which the space is adapted to him, and not to adults.

Today we bring you some tips for setting up a Montessori room:

  • The decoration must be very basic, without excessive elements and always with soft and warm tones, which do not overstimulate the child. The idea is to create a harmonious, simple, and orderly environment.
  • And as we want it ordered, it is important that there is a place for everything and that everything is in its place. Baskets, wooden boxes, etc. The child will quickly learn to put each material in its place and to develop a sense of order and to locate himself thanks to having well established reference points.
  • Related to the order we find another of the basic points of this method: everything has to be within the child's reach. We have to make it easier for him to access anything he wants, thus promoting freedom of movement and stimulating his ability to explore and investigate everything around him.
  • And the bed? Well, as simple as possible: on the ground, and without bars. Remember that the important thing is that you do not depend on adults to get in and out of bed. It is the same principle that we said before, freedom of movement at all times, fundamental for the correct development of the child.
  • If you have seen Montessori rooms you will have noticed that they all have a mirror. It is another of the basic elements according to this pedagogy. Put a mirror at the child's level so that it can be observed and contemplated for hours. We can add a wooden handrail along the mirror so that the little ones can grab and get up or start to take very safe steps.
  • The basic premise is that everything must be made of natural materials. Flee from the plastic, the lights, the colors and the batteries! Look for wooden elements, fabric, play with different fabrics and textures to stimulate the hearing, touch, and smell of babies.
  • Finally, although a simple decoration is recommended, you can hang some beautiful pictures with illustrations or photographs on the walls that stimulate your child's imagination and help make the room more beautiful if possible cabe
