It seems that these rainy days make one consider the visit of our beloved autumn and his first cousin, winter.

Fear not! since we don't want to be caught the bull the cold and you can enjoy the last summer baths, we are going to leave you some important tips for when temperatures begin to drop.

Although in winter the walks feel like a little less, going out to give the child air is very good for him (and for you). As you know babies (especially newborns) are the most vulnerable people to the cold and need more care and prevention when going out with them for a walk, traveling or taking them to school. That is why here we leave you some tips that are sure to be great!

1.- Find the right clothes. Surely if you are pregnant or have just given birth, your midwife will have recommended that you shelter the baby well because they do not regulate the temperature during the first days. If it is born in winter, all the more reason.

    • Hat: With the cold it is very important not to forget the hat since the head is one of the points that loses the most heat. There are many types: cotton, fluffy, wool with inner plush, with ear flaps, which are tied at the chin. We recommend that you get more than one in case you have to wash it.
    • Clothes: The baby should not be over-wrapped. Now is when all the doubts in the world come to you and you say 'And how do I know it is a lot or a little?' 'What if I put little clothes on and he's cold?' How do I know if he's cold? ' Don't worry, that has happened to all of us. Think about how you notice the temperature, it can be an approximation of how the baby is. Only you will put one more layer on him since he is asleep. You should always think about the route you are going to take: if you go to a shopping center, if you are going to be on the street, at the home of relatives, etc. Depending on the place, you will choose a specific coat. Our recommendation is that you put several layers on it to be able to play with the 'serve-pon' as you watch. It is important that they maintain a constant temperature to avoid skin rashes, eczema, dryness, and because if the clothes get wet with sweat, the contact with the skin becomes cold, etc. One of the main characteristics of the clothing to choose is that it is breathable and comfortable when removing and putting on or changing the diaper.

  • Sleepwear. Ideally, the baby's room should be kept around 20º-22º. If you keep this temperature you can put him to bed with a body + pajamas and cover him with a bag or blanket. There are also sacks and pajamas, but we will talk about them in another post (to define ages, temperatures, etc.)

2. If you want to know if it's cold you can check the nape, forehead and neck. If you notice that it is cool you can shelter it a little more. If you see the red cheeks and it is hot to touch, it is time to remove some layer.

3. Take the rain plastic. The stroller protector not only works for rain, you can also use it to protect your baby from windy moments.

4. Hygiene. What does hygiene have to do with cold? Much! Washing a child's hands is essential to avoid contracting the viruses found in their play areas. On these dates it is very important to control possible infections.

5. Go outdoors. Although they are overwintering times for many animals, babies need to get out. They cannot live locked up at home. As long as it is warm and it is not extremely cold outside, you can go out and discover the world.

6. When buying a bag or blanket you should look at the TOG numbering. This measure allows evaluating the thermal capacity of the bag or blanket. A high TOG value corresponds to a garment that provides more heat. When you are in front of a sack or blanket do not look at the thickness read what is your TOG.

7. Bath time. This moment can be very pleasant if you follow a series of necessary guidelines:

  • That the water temperature is correct so that it does not burn or get cold (between 36º -38º)
  • Trying to keep the whole house at the same temperatures (20º to 23º) if this is not the case, it is better than the bathroom, like drying and dressing the baby in the same room. This will avoid temperature changes.
  • In winter you can fill the bath a little more (without excesses)
  • Wash your head in the last step so you don't get cold with wet hair.
  • Have your bath cape (towel), diaper and clothes ready so you don't have to wait for the cold.
  • Always dry baby's hair.
  • It is not necessary to bathe the baby every day.
  • The games can be done outside the bath, so we avoid spending too much time and the water getting cold.

8. Choose a good shoe. In the case of children who still do not walk, they do not need to wear shoes with soles, in fact it is not the best recommendation. The best thing in those cases is to use thick socks or, if you are starting out in your first steps, socks with a rubber sole or non-slip. If you already start walking enough, it is recommended that the chosen footwear be flexible, with an insulating sole, with waterproof materials and easy to wash.

9. Avoid sudden changes in temperatures or drafts that are usually annoying.
10. A good diet it is essential to keep the immune system strong and prevent infection. Vegetables and fruits should be the main food of every day.

11. Hydration. Just because it's not hot doesn't mean your child has to drink water less often. Keep offering water whenever you think it's necessary and also accompany it with soups, natural juices, vegetable drinks or milk.
So your little ones will be able to say:

'The cold has never bothered me'
